This place has certainly caught my attention in more ways than one. On the Insauga Top 5's, Holy Smokez represents itself on numerous food frontiers such as one of the best Burger Concoctions, best ribs, and having the #1 Best Poutine in Mississauga "Pulled Pork Poutine"! Sounds promising enough; this place seemed like a sure thing! I set out on what seemed like a voyage to Smokez, travelling at least 40 minutes to get there. The long drive built me up quite the appetite, so I ordered their signature Pulled Pork and Slaw Sandwhich, and a small order of Pulled Pork Poutine! When I first entered the place I was hit with a wahf of smokeyness that got my taste budds salivating. The restaurant was completely empty, and the gentleman at the cash was very melancholy with his service. I spoke about how I heard about them on Insauga, and how they seem to be pretty popular. He responded, in a very smug tone, "Yeah...were a pretty big deal" . This should have been my first red flag, but I was so hungry I didn't even make note of it at the time. The sandwich was bigger than I expected, which is a good thing, but it fitted the price I think of 8$. The poutine was way over price, a small portion like this was 6$ O.o. I'll start with the (+)'s, the pork was definitely done right. It was probably the most tender piece of meat I've ever eaten. It just chewed so perfectly. The soft bun and the pork were textural twins almost. The meat was perfectly cooked...and that's about where it ends on the positive's lol. BBQ starts with perfectly cooked/smoked meat...but where it triumphs is the sauce, and this place just had no sauce game. Their BBQ sauce on the sandwich was underwhelming and mediocre at best. It lacked saltiness, boldness, zip, sweet, tang, sizzle, there was no Pazzaz! The slaw also was over cooked, or over soaked, or something cause it wasn't crunchy. You need something crunchy in that sandwich or it just feels like mush. The Poutine was even worse....the only good thing again about the poutine was the pulled pork on top. The fries had no crisp to them except the over cooked ones that were basically rocks, and the gravy was terrrrrrrrible. I had a nasty aftertaste that ruined the whole dish.... I didn't evern enjoy it. I still finished it don't get me wrong, but it gave me no satisfaction.
Overall the place knows how to smoke its meat, but they fail to bring that authentic BBQ flavor that even shelf condiments can closer represent.
