Eggs… Bacon... Pancakes. It’s the familiarity of breakfast foods that makes it so pleasurable to us. A trifecta of carbs, proteins and fats puts the gears in motion for the day ahead of us, and a satisfying breakfast accompanied with a cup of coffee is a perfect way to start. Although the transition into adulthood has subjected these adored breakfast foods into more of occasional outings as we find ourselves resorting to General Mills or Tim Hortons to keep up with society. Once that open slot comes along for a sit down breakfast banquet it certainly takes the Pancake.
As an advocate of the innovative and explorative route of food, I can appreciate the simplicity of breakfast when it is done well. Pancakes that are cloud 649 fluffy, bacon that’s think and crispy and runny buttery sunny side eggs. An egg breaking businesses like Skyway Jacks doesn’t stray too far off from the usual A.M menu, and the best way to stand out amongst the brunch bunch is delivering on both quality and quantity!
Skyway Jacks boasts itself as big platter players, and myself being a big portion consumer had woken up with a beastly appetite. I ordered their Special Breakfast which gave me a little taste of everything; eggs, bacon, sausage (opted for pemeal) and home fries and my co-pilot ordered a turkey bacon omelet and a side of pancakes to share. Now did the meal live out to its quantity quote? I’d have to say yes. Although the portions weren’t massive in my eyes, they meet my appetite. (Which I’ve been told is quite bigger than the average person.) So I would say the portions of the meal were sealed satisfactory.
As for the quality? I’d say it was some of the best presented breakfast food I’ve had. The pemeal bacon was THICK, the bacon was long stripped and crunchy. The eggs, sunny side, were buttery and not burnt. The home fries were chunky and stayed more true to their appearance of the potato rather than their hash brown alter ego. However, the seasoning and flavor was hit and miss. Most of the home fries were not seasoned well, but luckily table salt solves these issues. The pancakes were very very fluffy. Fluffy to a point they were also brittle. They did a fine job soaking up the maple syrup, however it couldn’t keep its integrity when forking it. The weight of the syrup would cause it to break. The omelette was very generous in size, and even more generous with the amount of turkey bacon inside.
All in all, the food lived up to quality and quantity. The only thing that would have played better in their portion preaching choir was if there was complimentary toast. Toast at a breakfast joint should be as complimentary as the jam in my opinion. The prices were fairly expensive for breakfast. Spending about 38$ for two people here is a bit much in my opinion.
