Door Fifty-Five

Port Credit’s Door FiftyFive is an watering hole that pays tribute to the “speakeasy” bars that upheld during the prohibition era. Fitted with a 1900’s interior and a drink menu that’s true to the era, the bar brings a reto rumrunner vibe, that has upheld its popularity since opening earlier this year. Stocked with an extravagant whiskery line, classic and modern cocktails and signature bitters and dram’s; even housing the most expensive tequila on the market (140$/shot). It may seem that Door Fifty-Five keeps a high reputation for a bar, but its the food that matters to me. I’m no bar blogger! I’m a food fanatic and that’s all this review cares about. So, what is the food like behind Door FifityFive?

If you have been following Beast and Feast long enough, you may have come to realize that Chicken and Waffles has been a frequent feasted favorite on the feed. I’ll admit I am biased towards ordering the breakfast-diner duet, but the concept of the dish speaks so true to me. Flavors and texture that compliment each other so well, despite being featured at two different meridiems. It may never have been discovered if someone didn’t envision breakfast being better with dinner, or dinner being better with breakfast? Whichever it was, it’s been a blessing to all of us. It may be a presumptuous statement here but I believe that Chicken and Waffles is the answer to world peace, and Door Fifty-Five seems to be handing out the white poppy’s as they hold down the number one spot for Chicken and Waffles in Mississauga (According to Insauga Top 5)

The best Chicken and Waffles in Mississauga? You have my attention! Not only that, but their Mac N Cheese also holds a spot in another Insauag Top 5. This is my ideal execution of killing two birds with 1 stone. Compared to their liquor line up their food menu is very small. Not even enough mains to count on all your fingers. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, since fewer menu items means that a higher grade of quality can be executed in the dishes. Well executed southern staples is the food motto here, and comfort food for me is chicken and waffles with a side of mac n cheese. Shall we….

The Chicken and waffles came out in an extravagant presentation. Two pieces of fried chicken skewed with a knife on top a thick waffle. The dish paired with a side of syrup and a thick beer infused gravy. The chicken was heavily crusted, almost “breaded” in a savory silo of herbs and spices. It was incredibly flavorful, and locked in the juicy flavors of the chicken. A thigh and a leg was shared between me and the lady, where I offered her the thigh and I took the drumstick. The drumstick had very little meat on it, with an thick application of breading. Though it was incredibly tasty, the meat was bastardly breaded. However, it was much better for the thigh given the extra meat on it. The gravy was a new contribution to the classic dish and worked really well the dominant savory notes of the chicken. The waffle was light and airy. Simple and composed in its profile on the plate, that help carry the plethra of flavors from all the other elements.

The Mac n' Cheese was sharp with cheddar and hinted with sweet from the caramelization of the breadcrumbs, encrusting it like a cheese brulee. It had great cheese pull aesthetics and the macaroni itself was cooked perfectly. Good big bite pasta too! Now the traditional way to step up mac and cheese is to add bacon to it...that takes it the extra mile. Well Door Fifty-Five went the extra km and added Deep Fried Boar Bacon to this cheddar coliseum. These bacon bits were thick cut chunks, that exploded and melted in your mouth simultaneously. It’s like the mac n cheese was life, and the primitive pork pieces were the passage to the Promised Land.

All in all there's no doubt that Door Fifty-Five brought a distinct take on the southern classic, giving it a savory sheen. I’d better enjoy the dish if the chicken itself was given more justice, whether it was offering more fried chicken to the plate (Most places provide more than two pieces of chicken) or exchange the drumstick for a meatier part of the bird. The chicken and waffles was definitely something outside the norm, and had a great concept behind it. It sadly just wasn't my favorite. The lady on the other hand, had a completely different opinion as she claims it was the best chicken and waffles she's had to date! (And she's eaten probably more than me) So, just comes to show you that personal preference plays a big part in these reviews. The only way to truly know is visit there yourself, and tell me what you thought of it!

Pros:

An up-scaled robust approached to the classic's

Delicious food

Cons:

Too much breading, not enough chicken.

4/5 stars to Door Fifty-Five. Budget was a little high given the size/quantity. I felt it fell short, but considering the elements that went into the dish; the gravy, custom crust, etc it is understandable where the extra expenses come from.
