I’ve had this place on my radar since I moved for school over a year ago. I’ve heard a couple things about the place. Some good, some not so good. The place had my attention, but not so much my interest. Diner’s are normally a perfect fit for me. I feel that they are the places more likely to serve table top treasures and break away the normal dining offerings. Despite having “diner” in its name, wimpy’s still seemed second-rate to me due to it being a diner chain. That was enough to damper my ambitions to eating there and It was through this narrow-minded judgment that I missed out on THE BEST eggs benedict I’ve ever had. Chocolate chip pancakes with the PERFECT cake to chip ratio, and omelets that crack an orphanage of baby chickens. I’ll admit it… I had this place all wrong and I formally apologize for my skepticism of this place in this review. The breakfast was absolutely mouthgasmic!
Lets get into some delicious detail!
The Eggs Benny was a big favorite of mine growing up, and Its been a while since I’ve asphyxiated poached eggs with hollandaise sauce. The rich buttery sauce can’t fail anyone’s taste buds; butter and eggs whisk into a sauce is full-proof, and anything it goes on is considered editable, even if its not. Wimpy’s served this buttery sauce on top of three perfectly poached eggs, caramelized onions, tomatoes, peameal bacon and a muffin of the English variety. The sauce… was so god damn good. I need to get that across first before I describe it in a wildly unnecessary way. It was like a breakfast nectar, derived from a Pandora sourced breakfast bush. It’s golden, silky portrayal was enough to sell your eyes on its rich characters, and left your tongue imagining if the rich flavors would follow. The hollandaise worked with every other ingredient on that plate. The caramelized onions being sweet and buttery themselves, giving a depth and body to the dish, and the peameal bacon giving texture and saltiness. The eggs were perfectly poached. Soft and runny. Cutting in you’d free the yolk from its captive state and allow it to sanctify the food that it patiently sat upon.
The pancakes were distinct and unique. I know, its hard to accept this but these pancakes were better than Denny’s. The pancake had textural layers I’ve never experienced on a pancake before. The outside had a more solid, firm outside with a delicate soft inside. Like a muffin having that firmer, denser top and the bottom half being fluffier and airier. Not too mention, just an explosion of chocolate chips in every single bite. Most places will be very skimpy on their additives to pancakes, however wimpy’s kept the chip count high in these stacks.
Whatever massive five egg omelet you get, you better believe its going to be packed with ingredients and cheese, and the home fries, really just chunks of potato’s, were very tasty too.
After this unforeseen breakfast at Wimpy’s, I’ve been become a firm fan of what I have had so far. One of the best breakfasts I’ve had at a diner themed restaurant. My only regret is not ordering that milkshake at 8:30 in the morning. But returning for that, along with something on the dinner menu, I do foresee!
