If you live in Port Credit, you probably already know all about Papa Giuseppe’s, and probably have already dined at the Italian gnocch. Than you may consider yourself one of the lucky ones and can excuse yourself from reading this review, Arrivederci! However, if you are of the population who has not dined at Papa Giuseppe’s than I offer you my wise eaten wisdom goomba.
Papa G’s is a Italian establishment located right in the heart of Port Credit. It’s a small set up located near the lighthouse, and resides amongst the many other restaurants on the Waterfront strip. Though this place seems to always be too busy for its own good, and there’s been at least a 20-minute wait on both occasions I’ve come here. The first attempt I showed too little patience and ended up moving to another location before our seats were open, the second time I was determined to stick it out after all the incredible things I heard there after. The restaurant claims not to be fancy; but it’s Italian. That to me still means fancy. Maybe its because it being Italian, means wine is an ideal pairing to anything you order on the menu. And wine, to me, seems like a fancy thing. So you fancy-huh, Papa Giuseppe’s.
The restaurant doesn’t stand out in its appearance on the outside, but peeking through the windows and seeing the restaurant packed makes you think otherwise. It’s quaint atmosphere makes for a nice diner out with family or one on one with your Tesoro (Sweet Heart) and the food itself is very edictally plated and served you’d feel your dining in a high end restaurant. The prices even actually felt that way. I will admit, they did have quite the price tag on many of their menu items. But in the end I still left having really enjoyed my experience. The staff was delightful. The food was delicious. The setting serene. However it being so busy all the time does counter that element a little.
Onto the reason you clicked on this review…the food!
I’m not sure if its just me, but truth be told. Italian food pretty much tastes the same wherever I go. Absolutely, there are subtle difference sin everyone’s tomato sauce, and some places parmesan is just “all the fresher”, but honestly, its all the same to me. That doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy, but no means is this the argument. And there were certain things that really did stand out to me here. For instance, their meatballs were probably the most moist balls I have ever had in my mouth. Yes. Leaving that and I don’t even care how that’s interpreted. So easily to chew and succulent. They came with their Polpette a la Michele item (basically spaghetti and meatballs), with perfectly cooked pasta. It had thick spaghetti noodles that held up strong but still had an effortless chew to them like its meatball companions. The pizza we ordered as an appetizer and decided to go standard Margarita. Because the best way to see how a restaurant stands out is too see if they can dazzle you with their most simple items. Maybe? Maybe not? That’s my rational. But it tasted as good as simple can be. I love extravagant, over the top things. Lots of flavors and ingredients jammed into one thing. But I can appreciate simple also. The tomato sauce hits with a bright tang and mellows off with a sweet tomato taste. The dough being super thin and the basil adding beautiful accent to the za. Nothing revolutionary here, its just simple done very well.
The experience was a memorable for the date night occasion and the spot on execution of the food. 4/5 stats
